Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ADOS-2?
The ADOS-2 is the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition. A trained clinician guides the person through planned activities and observes how they communicate, interact and play. The same protocol is followed every time, so the findings stay consistent.
Is the ADOS a diagnosis?
No. The ADOS-2 does not diagnose autism or any other condition. It gives structured observations and standardised scores. Only a qualified practitioner can make a diagnosis, and they read the ADOS-2 findings alongside developmental history and other information.
Who delivers the ADOS assessment at Astrad?
An AHPRA-registered occupational therapist trained in the ADOS-2. The same clinician handles your assessment from start to finish. They prepare, run the session, score it, write your report and take you through the findings.
What happens during an ADOS assessment?
It starts with an intake conversation with the parent, carer or client. Your therapist selects the ADOS-2 module that suits the person’s age and language level, then guides them through planned activities in a calm setting, observing throughout.
How long does an ADOS-2 assessment take?
Session length depends on the module used and the person being assessed. Preparation, scoring, report writing and your feedback session happen as well. Our team will give you a time guide when you book.
How much does an ADOS-2 assessment cost?
One all-inclusive fee covers preparation, the assessment, scoring, your written report, your feedback session and liaison with your treating team. There is no separate charge for the report. Your location and travel distance can affect the fee. Call us on (07) 3477 9366 for the current fee.
Can the NDIS fund an ADOS-2 assessment?
It depends on how your plan is managed and what it funds. Astrad is not a registered NDIS provider. We support self-managed and plan-managed participants, so agency-managed funding is not the right fit. This is general information, not NDIS advice. The NDIA decides what your plan funds.
Do I need a referral for an ADOS-2 assessment?
No. You do not need a referral to contact us. If you do have a referral or reports from a GP, paediatrician or psychologist, we review them as part of your assessment.
Can adults have an ADOS-2 assessment?
Yes. The ADOS-2 has modules for different ages and language levels, including one for adolescents and adults. Your therapist selects the module that fits, so the activities suit the person.
Where does the ADOS-2 assessment take place?
We come to you. The assessment can take place at home, at school or in another agreed setting across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Coverage depends on your location, so call us on (07) 3477 9366 to check we can reach you.
Who can I share the report with?
The report is yours. It covers background history, clinical observations, ADOS-2 findings, interpretation, functional implications and recommendations. Share it with your GP, paediatrician, psychologist, school or support team. With your consent, we can liaise with your referring practitioner.
How do I book an ADOS assessment?
Call our team on (07) 3477 9366. We will answer your questions, confirm the fee, check we can reach your location and book a time that suits you. Have any referral letters or earlier reports handy.
