Who We Help in Port Macquarie and the Hastings
Older Adults
Many older people want to stay in their own home. We look at safety, falls risk and daily tasks, then suggest changes that suit how you live.
Carers and Families
Caring for someone at home is hard work. We can include you in the visit and explain equipment, safer routines and options that may ease the load.
NDIS Participants
Participants who self-manage or plan-manage their funding can book us. We complete functional capacity assessments, equipment reports and housing and living support reports.
Injury or Diagnosis
A new injury or diagnosis can change how you manage at home. An assessment looks at what has changed and what could help you do more for yourself.
Assessment-Led Occupational Therapy
Assessments an Occupational Therapist in Port Macquarie Can Complete
Your OT looks at each room, the entry and the steps. We note hazards and suggest home modifications, such as grab rails, ramps or a better shower setup.
For older adults, we check falls risk, home safety and daily routines. Our advice aims to help you stay safely in your own home for longer.
We assess how you move and what you need each day. That may mean a walker, wheelchair, shower chair or other assistive technology that suits your home.
A functional capacity assessment looks at how you manage self-care, the home and the community. NDIS participants often use this report to support a plan review.
We write SDA, SIL and ILO reports for NDIS participants. Each report sets out your daily support and housing needs. The NDIA makes the final funding decision.
After the visit, your OT writes up the findings. The report lists what we found, what we recommend and the practical steps to take next.
How an Assessment Visit Works
Each assessment visit follows three simple steps.

- 1
Needs Analysis
Before the visit, we talk through your routines, your goals and the tasks you find hard. This helps us plan the right assessment for you.
- 2
Assessment and Recommendations
Your occupational therapist visits your home and watches how you manage. We suggest equipment, home changes or new routines that suit your situation.
- 3
Report and Next Steps
Your OT writes a report with our recommendations. We explain what it means and guide you on funding and next steps.
Funding Options
Paying for an Assessment
Clients fund their assessments in different ways. This is general information only.
NDIS Funding
If your plan is self-managed or plan-managed, you can choose us as your therapist. The NDIA decides what your plan funds, so check your plan before booking.
Aged Care Funding
Support at Home replaced Home Care Packages on 1 November 2025. Your aged care assessment decides what support you can access. Ask us how an OT assessment fits.
Private Clients
You do not need a funding plan to book. Private clients can pay for a home assessment or report directly. Ask us about fees when you get in touch.
Staying safe at home in Port Macquarie
Port Macquarie-Hastings has an older population than most of New South Wales. At the 2021 Census, the median age in the local government area was 49. The New South Wales median was 39. About 29% of residents were aged 65 or over, compared with about 18% across the state.
That picture shapes our work here. Many people want to keep living in their own home. Falls are a common worry. Bathrooms, front steps, loose rugs and poor lighting are frequent trouble spots.
An occupational therapy home assessment looks for the cause first. Your OT watches how you get in and out of the shower, up the steps and around the kitchen. The report may suggest grab rails, a ramp, shower aids, better lighting or a change to your routine. Small changes can help a home feel safer. Individual results vary.
Coming home after a hospital stay
Many people return home from Port Macquarie Base Hospital or Port Macquarie Private Hospital after surgery, a fall or an illness. Home can feel different afterwards. The house may be harder to move around than before.
An occupational therapist in Port Macquarie can check that your house is ready. Your OT looks at access, the bathroom, the bedroom and the kitchen. The visit may lead to equipment or changes that aim to make the first weeks at home safer. You or your family can contact us directly to arrange a visit.
How we cover Port Macquarie
We want to be clear about how we work here. Our day to day work sits near the Queensland border, in the Northern Rivers. Port Macquarie is further south, on the Mid North Coast. We visit Port Macquarie on planned trips. We travel to these areas from time to time rather than on a day to day basis. That works well for assessments.
That is why this page focuses on assessments and reports. Continuing therapy sessions are harder to offer at this distance. If you are hoping for ongoing support, talk to us first. We will be straight with you about what we can commit to and what we cannot. You can read more about how our coverage tiers work.
Do you live outside the town itself? Nearby towns include Wauchope, Laurieton in the Camden Haven, Lake Cathie, Bonny Hills and Kendall. Contact us with your address and we will confirm what we can offer.

What does an occupational therapist in Port Macquarie look at during a home assessment?
Your OT looks at how you move and manage everyday tasks in your own home. That includes the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, steps, lighting and floor surfaces. They may watch you get in and out of the shower or up the front steps. They also ask about your routines and goals. Afterwards, you receive a written report. Aged care clients are welcome, and family members can join the visit. Individual results vary.
